Dr. Ramirez Swims the Bay to Fight Cystic Fibrosis

Dear Friends and Family,

Recently I have been training in local swimming pools and open water lakes to do what was unthinkable several years ago: swimming 1.25 miles from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco! As you can imagine, I am both excited and nervous about my upcoming participation in the 16th Annual Alcatraz Invitational Swim! The Big Day is September 17, 2011.

I am facing some major challenges. The water is cold and the currents are rough. (Not to mention the thought of the wildlife that lives in the Bay!) It was a goal of mine 15 years ago when I was in dental school and lived in San Francisco. Time has passed and this personal challenge has remained in the back of my mind since. Well the time is now, and I have a fantastic reason to swim in this exciting event: to support my friend, Faith.

Faith is 6 years old and has cystic fibrosis. She lives right here in Roseville area and her family and I would like to bring awareness to this terrible disease. (Here is a wonderful video about Faith's life that I would like to share with you.)

Cystic fibrosis (CF) occurs in about 1 in 3500 live births. It is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. These thick secretions also obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from reaching the intestines to help break down and absorb food. The mucus also can block the bile duct in the liver, eventually causing permanent liver damage in approximately six percent of people with CF.

Champagne & Chocolates, May 3rd Event

As those of you who attended know, our May 3rd (2011) event, Champagne & Chocolates, was a huge, fun success. We raised over $1,500 for Keaton Raphael Memorial.

We are very proud of the participants and the work we did that evening. We would like to thank everyone who participated for making the night memorable and exciting!
